Selling as I’ve seen another bus I really want.

An early bus in a very desirable colour scheme. I’ve owned this bus since early 2013 when I imported it directly from the USA. It had spent the majority of it’s life in Southern California up until that point. We’ve used it for numerous family holidays (500 mile trips each time) and daily driver throughout summer. It drives really nice. Totally ‘planted’ on the motorway, no wandering about. Low but comfortable ride. Great acceleration and easy hill climbing.
During the time I’ve owned it I’ve spent a lot of time and effort ensuring all the parts work as they should do and upgrading various components. The intention next was to start to focus on the bodywork but keep it used throughout 2017 for holidays etc – taking it off the road at the end of the year for a full strip down. However, my dream bus has come up for sale.

It’s a European spec bus so therefore has semaphores instead of bullet front indicators

Body : All of the following are my description based on you wanting a perfect bus. If you wanted to run it looking ‘ratty’ then you can just jump in and go.
    • Floors : Great
    • Chassis rails, top hats and outriggers : Great
    • Roof : Great
    • Gutters : Great
    • Windows : Great (some slight bubbling on side window frame and a repair required to one pop-out catch location)
    • Cab doors : Good – some filler on there but definitely useable
    • Cargo doors : Good – repairs needed to the very bottoms
    • Rear hatch : Great
    • Engine lid : OK. Correct for year but needs work to straighten and repairs to hinges and the prop.
    • Front clip : Poor – will need work to bottom 8” or so
    • Front arches : OK – some repair needed to passenger side
    • Long sill : Poor – will need replacing but I have this panel (Autocraft) as part of the sale
    • Short sill : Good. New (all three pieces) but needs some tidying
    • Driver rear corner : Poor. Will need either cutting out and replacing or possibly beating out/repairing. Different body shops have suggested both methods
    • Passenger rear corner : Poor – some filler in there
    • Battery tray : Good
    • Rear valance : Poor – rusted out in centre due to exhaust heat
    • Front wheel arches : Great - have been tubbed using tubs from Trailer Queen Restos. Plenty of clearance no matter how low the bus is.

Paint : Seems to be rattle can with some fake rust air-brushed on along the swage line. Colours are on PGSG theme – even has the pinstriping. Original pain scheme is PGSG as shown on birth certificate from VW

    Interior :
Rubber mats throughout. No other interior as we had planned to work around the bodywork and this is made easier without having to remove door cards/lining/carpets etc
Rear set is fitted to ‘Z’ hinges which allow you to retain the original seat but it transforms into a very comfortable bed.
Middle seat with flip down end section
Front bench seat with heated seat pads for driver and passenger

Engine : 1955cc with twin Weber 40 IDF. 043 heads but unknown cam. Petronix distributor. Pulls VERY well even fully loaded with three people and camping gear up long hills. All tinwear/cooling is there along with full flow filter and 20 row oil cooler/electric fan situated under the van with a scoop to aid cooling air flow over it. Full breather system and catch can fitted with vent to right hand carb. Sidewinder exhaust with tip modified to exit behind the rear wheel.

Gearbox : Late beetle swing axle box with solid front mount. Gators replaced with top quality 1-pieces items (no split/with the bolts) to reduce chance of ripping and leakage. Nose seal replaced. Nosecone reverse switch hole welded.
Adjustable spring plates fitted and radiused for clearance.

Front beam : 4” (I think – maybe more) narrowed with adjusters and flipped spindles

Wheels – stock VW 15” x 4.5” bus wheels. Correct to the bus

Front Brakes : Vented discs with 4-pot Willwood callipers and braided hoses. Fantastic stopping and NO brake fade even on the longest downhill descent. New bearings fitted at the same time as the brakes.

Rear Brakes : ‘Thing’ drums with new cylinders and flexi brake hoses. New bearings also fitted.

Other brake details : Master cylinder updated to dual circuit with new Cunifer pipework throughout.

Tyres : ‘Fat and thin’ 165/50/15 at the front, 195/65/15 at rear – Continental Tyres

    Other points to mention :
    • Van updated to 12 volt.
    • New fuse box fitted – original spec reproduction
    • Headlamps have had new sealed beams fitted along with H4 bulbs.
    • Semaphores have been updated to use flashing LED bulbs (REALLY bright).
    • New clutch cable fitted
    • Rear roof rack included in the sale that also has provision to carry two bikes. This section detaches from the main rack when not needed.
    • No UK road tax to pay or MOT to be taken
    • Willing to help with logistics arrangements
