You’re looking at my 1967 1500 Swedish market Beetle.
The car was imported by me from Sweden in 2010 as a rust free, original paint survivor car.
Being a European model of the ’67 1500 Beetle, it came from the factory with dual circuit brakes and disc brakes up front. The thing that distinguishes this car from other European cars though, is the Swedish spec additions, such as factory 12 volt electrics, a steering lock and the Eberspacher auxiliary heater. It also came from the factory in L282 Lotus White with the Red interior option.
Many people consider the 1967 1500 Beetle to be the best ever Beetle; when it was launched in August 1966 it was dubbed the “Hot New 1500” by Volkswagen and the 1500 is a great engine to live with, even in modern traffic; it doesn’t have the emissions equipment or flat spots of the later twin port 1600 engine and has great torque and a longer legged gearbox, with a 4.12 ring and pinion.
I sold the car in 2010 to a nice couple near Eastbourne, who looked after the car well, renewing most of the rubber seals and having the car undersealed (I stripped most of the original underseal in 2010 to reveal perfect original paint in all the areas where Beetle usually rot). They eventually passed the car to another owner, after which there was a problem with the engine. A friend then bought the car and had the engine fully rebuilt, after which I saw it for sale and just had to have it back, as I knew how great it was underneath.
I bought the car for the second time in March; I’d had to sell another rust free 1970 Swedish Beetle in order to buy this one. The car needed the rebuilt engine fitted, after which I put the car through a new MOT (it is now MOT and Tax exempt). Once I’d put an MOT on the car, it became my daily driver; I’ve driven all over the south of England in the car and as far as North Wales. I write for Volksworld, Volksworld Camper & Bus and VWt magazines and have written a couple of project updates and How to features for Volksworld based on this car.
Work that I’ve done to the car since buying it for the second time in March includes:
    • Repainted all of the tinware, inlet manifold and cleaning ancilliary parts.
    • Fitted new oil cooler seals, crankshaft seal and O ring and full new German clutch kit.
    • Rebuilt wiper motor.
    • Fitted new German quality rear windscreen seal and renewing the headliner underneath the rear window due to fading.
    • Fitted new aerial so the original 12 volt FM radio has a perfect reception.
    • Fitted a new German quality bonnet seal and ¼ light upright seal.
    • Fitted a set of accessory chevron mudflaps and rare passenger side swan neck mirror (great rear vision).
    • Changed gearbox oil.
    • Buffed paintwork with a machine buffer.
    • Swapped the front bumper for an excellent used original German one.
    • Had some paintwork carried out to the drivers side (before pics available) to take car of some old dents.
    • Fitted a new Heavy duty battery (decided to go for HD with 45AH and 540CCA for the eberspacher heater).
    • Fitted a NOS glow plug to the Eberspacher heater.
    • Repainted the insides of the bumpers and brackets.
    • Had the original German carb rebuilt and ultrasonically cleaned.
    • Fitted a good tested German thermostat – original flaps and warm up equipment installed and working.
    • Restored the original number plates with the original patina digits and new back plates from Tippers Vintage Plates. These have a rounded corner bevel and look like original 1960's plates from Bluemels or Hills.
I’m sure there’s much more that I’ve done, but I can’t remember it all off hand. Basically, if the car needed it, I’ve done it and with the best quality parts available. I currently can’t get the Eberspacher heater to fire up; it worked well in 2010 when I imported the car, but despite fitting the NOS glow plug, I’m still working on it to get it working; it’s probably a sticking fuel pump.
The only reason I’ve decided to sell the car is because I want another early bay camper; I have my eye on a project bus that I can put together in time for next summer. I've just finished putting together my first VW book - Patina Volkswagens - for Veloce Publishing (shameless plug, I know) and I want a Patina early bay camper to tour all the European VW shows selling my book next year. (you can read more about the book at patinavw.com). I know I’ll likely never find another Beetle this good, especially a high spec white ’67 1500 with a red interior – my favourite colour combination.
The only welding that has ever been done to the car is a small repair on the floorpan under the battery and to the lower hinge on the driver’s door, presumably it opened too far at some point and damaged the hinge. The door closes fine and this area would be easy to fix, but I haven’t had chance to do it.
The interior of the car is all original save for the addition of a full set of expensive original style square weave carpets by the previous owner. The original seat covers have a little wear – see pictures on google link – I did order TMI covers, but then decided they were better left original, as the TMI covers don't have the right profile at the top of the front backrests..I'm sure any upholsterer could replace the worn sections, but it has a lot of life left in it as it is.
If you’ve had Beetles before, or ever tried to find a good, genuine and original unmolested one, then you’ll already know just how rare it is to find a car in this condition. The car even has all 4 1967 1500 only hubcaps, which are different to later flat caps and hard to find. I’ve put together a google photos link with a lot of pictures of the car from all angles; as you can see, I’ve taken pics from all angles to show that I’m not hiding anything. You’re welcome to come and have a look; I live at the seaside in sunny Southsea, literally moments from the beach, so bring your other half and have a nice day out too.
The google photos link is here: photos.app.goo.gl/LZoJnjV7a14P1uaeA (you will have to copy and paste into your browser or it won’t work). Please note: the pictures showing the stripped underseal and the original rear window Swedish dealer sticker are from 2010; the car has now been re-undersealed for protection. The dealer sticker is now gone, but would be easy to reproduce (it was on my list of things to do). I also have pictures of the outside of the car from 2010 when it was 100% original paint. It has now had paint to both sides of the car and the front due to small dents and stone chips.
Thanks for looking. I can assist with worldwide shipping/delivery.
