According to a certificate from the VW Museum the #11 Karmann Ghia “Iceracer” left the Osnabrück production line just before Christmas 1956 and was shipped to America on the 3rd of January 1957. At that time it looked like an ordinary Lowlight coupé and wore the color combination of “L330” trout blue over the dark blue and grey interior. But normal life didn’t last long for the blue VW, its owner at that time, Dr. Rudolf Schleutermann decided to modify the elegant coupé to a racecar. From 1961 the Ghia was extensively raced mainly on dry land, but in some cases already on ice as seen in the Foreign Car Guide Magazine’s article about the 3 Hour Naomi Lake Grand Prix of Endurance. Over the years it was step by step developed to a proper racer, the chassis completely stripped, equipped with a Porsche 356 Super 90 engine, Porsche drums, Südrad wheels a Full Roll Cage just to name a few of the most important modifications. The side windows with its frames were removed and the doors were welded in. The protection against rain and snow is provided by plastic covers which can be fixed to the chassis by snaps. Almost nothing was left untouched over the car’s extensive racing years. I found the Ghia in the Netherlands in a state as it was last raced under number “11” in 1969. Even the original, matching helmet was still in the car. Not all details of the adventurous past are known, but before its arrival back to the old continent the unique racer was in the “odd” collection of Myron Vernis.
