1967 9-passenger sliding door standard with lots of great patina!
This bus was rescued down by Willmington, NC a few years ago where it had been sitting for a long time. It had formerly been a church bus before being put out to pasture. A local VW enthusiast scored it after many attempts and got it back on the road. He cleaned it up and had lots of custom work done to it (lowered, big engine, etc.) before passing it along to the current owner. At that point it went to Monkey Nut in Charlotte, NC to go through the entire bus and make it a road warrior.
The bus is wearing about 80% original Sea Blue/Cumulus White paint. There is standard rust along the lower edge of the long rocker and passenger side B-pillar. There is evidence of an old accident/repair to the drivers front door and dogleg, but everything closes and fits fine. The lower edge of the nose and inner valance are a bit crusty, but it fits the bus.
Areas of body rust were spot treated with ospho and sealed with neutralizer, then lightly blended and distressed. The roof paint was in bad shape, so it received the same rust neutralizing treatment and was repainted and distressed to blend with the rest of the patina. The battery tray was replaced at the seams with a Klassic Fab 67-only unit and paint blended to match the bus. All body and window seals were replaced as well. New Wolfgang safari windows were fully installed with weld-in brackets and wiper disconnects. Popout window frames were replaced with stainless units, then like the safaris window and side window frames, painted and distressed to match the bus.
A new, correct full headliner was installed as well as new seat covers and on front, middle and rear seats. New seat belts were installed throughout. The bus was lined with Kilmat sound deadening before the original interior panels were reinstalled. The wiring was sorted out throughout the bus and a restored speedometer and new 12V fuel gauge was installed. All lights, horn, wipers, blinkers, etc work as they should. Even has the original European locking steering column ignition switch setup! Door handles are cleaned, lubed and keyed and the sliding door mechanism serviced and a new guide block. Original bumpers were disassembled, broken bolts replaced, tapped and reassembled with new hardware and rear splash pans.
The bus has a 4” narrowed Womack beam with dropped spindles, Bilstien shocks, and Porsche 944 from disc brakes (hubs, rotors and calipers). The rear has similar treatment with Porsche 944 disc brakes, Bilstien shocks attached to a swing axle freeway flier transmission. The bus is running Porsche pattern Cosmic 15” wheels with new Vredestein tires front and rear (175 55 R15 front and 195 60 R15 rear). The 2.0L+ engine with big valve heads and a pair of Weber 44s. It’s equipped with a Vintage Speed Sport tucked muffler attached to flanged big diameter heater boxes. Concept-1 fresh air fan shroud with functioning thermostat/flaps and Type 4 oil cooler set up. Come with white half rack not 3/4 rack.
With a Buttys Bits Heim joint linkage installed, when you punch the pedal, this bus gets it!
Fly in and drive it home! Not many sliding door splits this cool around.
